The management of a purebred horse breeding programme, for example the ‘Haflinger’ breed in Switzerland – with the exception of South Tyrol/Italy, the birthplace of the Haflinger breed, which belonged to Tyrol-Austria prior to 1918 – is the responsibility of the Haflinger Horse Breeding Association of Tyrol-Austria. Starting a purebred horse breeding programme with UZB (Book of Origin) status:

1. ⇒ The breeding establishment acquires a ‘Haflinger’ and decides to breed this horse and produce foals by joining the stud book responsible for this horse as a member.

2. ⇒ Membership of the breeding association is determined by the pedigree of the breeding foal, e.g. a breeding association, breeding federation or breeding co-operative.

3. ⇒ The breeding association or breeding co-operative is a member of the breeding organisation; there may be approximately three breeding organisations per breed

4. ⇒ Each breeding organisation is a member of the umbrella organisation, in that the breeding organisations belong to the umbrella organisation, e.g. Haflinger-Pentagon Sàrl-GmbH.

5. ⇒ The umbrella association brings together the umbrella organisations of the organisations maintaining the original studbooks and is a member of the umbrella association that unites the organisations maintaining the original studbooks which have established a breeding programme for the ‘Haflinger’ have drawn up a breeding programme, e.g. effective from 1 January 2021: the Haflinger Horse Breeding Association of Tyrol, A-6341 Ebbs.
